In the manga version, Martel was never part of a Special Forces unit, and was transported to the 5th Laboratory because of her wounds after stepping on a landmine. She, like Dorchet, was not even in Ishbal, but was fighting in the border war with Aerugo. She is killed in the sewers by the Fuhrer shortly after he had pinned Greed to the wall of the sewers with his swords.
She had been hiding inside Al's armor, but when she saw Bradley kill Dorchet and Loa, she used Al to choke Bradley. The Fuhrer proceeded to kill her inside Al's armor, where her blood falls onto Al's blood seal. This causes Al to regain all his memory from when he was in the Gate, and soon after, Al realizes that he, like Ed and Izumi, can also perform alchemy without a transmutation circle. Having been unable to save Martel traumatizes Al in the same way that Nina's death traumatized Ed.
